Esfahan province at a glance
The province of Isfahan (population 3,430,353 in 2006) - is situated in the centre of Iran, located between the Zagros Mountain and the central plain. Its capital city, Esfahan (also Isfahan) and its
surrounding region’s census population was 3,793, 104 in 2011.
From ancient times, the kings of various dynasties made Esfahan Province the centre of government. Today, thanks to its rich cultural heritage, the region has a thriving tourism industry. Most of the centres of historical interest date from the Seljuk and Safavid periods.
Isfahan province has also experienced rapid industrial development and is now one of the largest industrial regions in the country. The most significant industries are: steel, defence, medicine, plastics, textiles, weaving and handicraft.
